Statement regarding the stolen rainbow flag (August 2023)
Dear Hyde Park Community:
We thought you would like to know that our rainbow flag on the church’s main entrance was stolen the day after the Pride Parade on June 26, 2023. Unauthorized folks cut the wires and took the whole rainbow flag set away. It was not the first time that our church encountered it. Last year, another rainbow flag was removed by two unauthorized folks in the late evening. Last year, a rainbow motif lawn sign “A Just World for All” was removed from the church’s lawn and found a block away from the church.
The United Church of Hyde Park has become a strong ally for LGBTQ+ siblings since 2021 when we officially became a self-declared Open and Affirming, and joined Reconciling Ministries Networks and More Light Presbyterians. The progressive rainbow flag is one of the messages that we deliver our solidarity with our LGBTQ+ siblings and communities. We will put back another rainbow flag in the same spot, our church’s main entrance on 53rd Street and Blackstone Ave.
We would like to invite you, who also allies and advocates for LGBTQ+, to join us to deliver our strong commitment in creating a just world for all, by
(1) sharing this post with your friends
(2) sending us your words of support and suggestions
(3) considering sending us Progressive Rainbow Flag (size of 28*40 inches)
We believe that the Hyde Park community should be a safe neighborhood for all people and we hope you can join us in spreading that message of love.
